Toshi has just completed recording "Body Bounce", the final contribution to his upcoming release--set for the new year. He took a break to reflect on his album project and give us an update on, well, everything. . .
Toshi: There is nothing like a New York Autumn.
Where do you consider home to be?
New York. It's the most comfortable city.
Is there anything you'd like to express regarding the album, which you just completed?
Relief! There are many things we still have to do.
How would you describe it?
Sweet but groovy.
Which is your favorite track on the cd?
Masquerade. I think I hear myself most on that song. And The Roots' groove makes it so right-on. I think it's a perfect combination.
What's your style?
The unique style that exists between day wear and the stuff you wear after dark.
Who are your favorite designers?
555 Soul and Dolce & Gabbanna.
What would you never wear?
Anything techno or heavy metal rocker style. Old school hard rock is cool, however.
What is your most cherished thing?
Time to relax surrounded by candles.
Who or what is the love of your life?
I am not a mamma's boy. But I respect and love my mother.
What turns you on?
A very unique sense of humor. And I like people who know how to dance.
What turns you off?
Bragging, un-funky people.
What makes you swoon?
Ladies' legs.
What is the hardest thing about working in the music industry?
Expressing myself and getting people's attention. But it's a challenge I love.
What is the easiest thing about a musician's lifestyle?
I can wear anything I want. And I don't have to get up so early.
What was your big break?
It's always happening.
What do you dream about?
Getting rid of barriers between people. That's what I want to do with my music all over the world.
What freaks you out?
Besides violence--snakes, frogs. . . all reptiles.
Any hidden talents?
Drawing and painting.
What makes you cry?
Whenever I hear about sad relationships or family situations.
Who is your favorite emcee?
Jay-Z.
Who is your favorite singer today?
D'Angelo as far as men and Mary J. Blige for the women vocalists.
Of all time?
Marvin Gaye.
When is your birthday?
July 24.
How do you keep from getting homesick?
I used to get really homesick like three or four years ago. Especially when I would watch Japanese programs or films. Watching funny American movies and TV shows helped me to appreciate here more. I got over it. And I don't get that particular feeling anymore.
What is your favorite word?
Peace.
